Research Bases

 

In order to carry out research, education and conservation activities Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation provides research stations and bases on the following islands in the eastern Aegean Sea:

Research Bases

 

Samos Island

Vathi

The Archipelagos Headquarters & Study Centre is located in Vathi, the capital of Samos. Adjacent to the coast, Archipelagos’ headquarters is housed in a neoclassical building that has been provided by the University of the Aegean.
With wireless internet throughout, the base provides offices, teaching and meeting rooms, basic research laboratories (marine biology, chemistry/ microbiology, seed bank, botany), as well as a library.
 
Full board is provided through the kitchen situated at the base. Accommodation is available in nearby local pensions. 
 
Vathi is a traditional island town with a range of activities to suit all tastes. It houses one of the best archaeological museums in Greece and offers excellent recreation options and swimming beaches nearby.

   

Ormos

The Coastal Ecosystem & Terrestrial Research Base is located on the southern side of Samos in the coastal village of Ormos Marathokampos. 
This base provides offices, basic research laboratories (marine biology, chemistry/ microbiology, seed bank, botany), and a library and presentation area. Diving/snorkelling gear and equipment for marine research are located at this base. A small experimental aquarium is also under construction. Wireless internet is available throughout the base.
A short walk from the Archipelagos base is a small pension where dormitory-style accommodation and full board is provided.
Ormos is a small traditional fishing village that has managed to escape the trappings of mass tourism, and therefore maintains its traditional character throughout the year. The research base and accommodation facilities are situated adjacent to the beach and a 5 minute walk from the centre of Ormos, where you will find a selection of tavernas and cafes and a small convenience shop.

The nearby tourist village of Kampos offers excellent recreational and entertainment options, with beautiful beaches and a variety of tavernas, restaurants, bars and pools. There are also some great hiking routes, especially to the summit of Mount Kerkis.

 
     



 

Ikaria Island

 
The Forestry and Agronomy Research Base is located in the village of Kastanies, Rahes, on the island of Ikaria. It is located within a traditional island community, at 500m altitude, bordering small scale agricultural land and a pine forest.
The base provides offices, basic research laboratories (botany, dendrology, chemistry, seed bank), a computer room, library and presentation area.
There is wireless internet connection throughout the base, as well as an online meteorological station and an A.I.S receiver station. Dormitory-style accommodation and kitchen facilities are offered on the base, which is heated by a biomass heating unit. Additional accommodation is available in local pensions in the nearby village.

 

Fourni Island

The Fisheries Research Station is located on Fourni Island, within one of the few purely traditional fishing communities of the Aegean. This research station has been provided by the local authorities of the Municipality of Fourni.

Offices and basic research laboratories (fisheries, marine biology) are provided at this station.
Located in the village of Agios Ioannis, 6km from the main village of Fourni, the base offers dormitory-style accommodation and kitchen facilities. Ancillary accommodation is available in local pensions of Fourni village.

 

 

 

Research Stations on Coastal Biodiversity & Sustainable Development, based in Patmos, Arki and Marathi islands in the north Dodecanese.

 
The stations are housed in facilities provided by the local authorities and the Patmos Monastery. The stations provide simple office and marine biology lab facilities, and are utilised for short duration stays by the research teams.
Dormitory-style accommodation and kitchen facilities are provided, while ancillary accommodation is also available at nearby local pensions and hotels. 
 

Patmos

Patmos is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese, with a population of about 3.000 inhabitants. The landscape features low barren hills and many picturesque bays and coves. The island is famous worldwide for its historic centre Chora, which along with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Patmos is a very popular tourist destination both as a religious pilgrimage site as well as for its wild and untouched natural beauty.

Arki and Marathi

 

 


Arki is a small island in the North Dodecanese Island Complex, located in close proximity to the neighboring island of Marathi. It has a population of 45 inhabitants. This research station is predominantly used for marine research. It is a region that is quite unique and unspoilt and boasts a high marine biodiversity.
   
Marathi is a very small islet close to Arki, having 3-5 permanent inhabitants. In Marathi the local authorities have provided Archipelagos with the use of an environmental observatory.
