The aim of Archipelagos Aigaiou is to achieve effective protection and conservation of the special natural environment of the Aegean Sea. For this reason, it conducts scientific research on the marine and terrestrial environment of the Aegean islands, as well as on the factors that threaten it. In parallel, it implements actions that develop environmental awareness in the local communities.
Archipelagos, Institute of Marine & Environmental Research of Aegean test has been conducting scientific research on the marine and terrestrial environment of the Eastern Aegean Sea since 2000, (permit from the Greek Ministry of Agriculture). Between 2001-2006 research has focused on the region encompassing the islands Ikaria, Fourni, Samos, Arki, Lipsi, Patmos, Agathonisi, Farmakonisi and Levitha, with the use of Archipelagos' research sailing boat Pinelopi, as well as of 2 research bases and 2 research stations in this region.
The research programme is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Essex, England, as well as with scientists and research institutes from several European countries.
The permenant team of Archipelagos consists of 18 environmental scientists and researchers of various specialties, implementing the research and conservation throughout the year, in Archipelagos' research bases & stations, on the eastern Aegean Sea, as well as with the research boats. Many other scientists frequently offer valuable scientific work resulting in the better implementation of the aims of Archipelagos.
All research and conservation activities of Archipelagos are self-funded and are implemented through the truly voluntary work of the research team and also the support of the members of Archipelagos.
