Up to a few decades ago stone was the main building material for houses in Ikaria. These traditional houses were built a distance from one another and could not be easily seen from the sea, hence offerring protection from the pirate attacks which were a frequent phenomenon in the Aegean during past centuries. The houses had no chimney so the smoke was not visible from a distance, instead it dispersed through the roof, also keeping away woodworm and humidity.
